OCL’s Top 5 Half Term Adventures

Spending the final weekend of October half-term in the South-West and unsure what to do?

Here's some ideas of how to keep the kids entertained, rain-or-shine! 💦☀️

1. CYCLE HIRE AND A PORTHLEVEN PASTY

Lakeside Cycles, run by local bike-enthusiast Shawn, is located on the edge of Penrose Park (National Trust) and provides the most perfect day out with children, dogs, husbands etc. 🚲

The route takes you through the park and alongside The Loe with the final destination of Porthleven for lunch.

Open year-round and currently offering an October 10% off plus Saturday Special of kids go free (1/adult) it's one not to be missed! 🍁

2. HEALEYS CYDER FARM BY TRACTOR

Located between Perranporth and Newquay, Healeys is a small but working cyder farm offering tractor rides through the orchards 🚜and pumpkin carving throughout the Autumn.

The adults can sample the cyder delights while the children can say hello to Duchess and Dancer, the working Shire horses - amongst plenty of other farm animals! 🐖🐏🐓🐎 See the inner workings of the cyder farm, with its magical mix of modern. brewing techniques and traditional quaint farm life.

3. STROLL AND A SUNDAY ROAST

Head towards the stunning coastline of Zennor (nr St Ives) to experience a unique Cornish blend of rugged rocks and mystical moorland. Start in the village and head past the Tinners Arms pub towards the South West coastal path to admire picturesque scenery 👀 as you walk along the steep cliffs, crossing streams and waterfalls.

Keep heading along the coast until you reach the old mine ruin, handily named Old Mine Ruin.

Then follow the track path inland until you reach the glorious yellow building of the Gurnard's Head pub. Make sure you've booked well in advance to enjoy one of their famous Sunday roasts served with a cocktail of your choice (Em loves the horseradishy Bloody Mary 🍅 whilst I devoured a Negroni).

And if you haven't got your booking in time, head back round to the equally charming Tinners Arms (back near the start!). We recommend holding off on desert so you can walk off your meal with a stroll across the fields back to the village - ending at the Moomaid of Zennor café - where the famous ice-cream parlour all began 🍦.

4. BREAKFAST AND A DIP IN PENZANCE LIDO

Unique and quirky hotel, Artist Residence in Penzance, hosts a fantastic and great-value breakfast/brunch menu served alongside beautiful morning cocktails 🍸.

With excellent friendly service, feel right at home in the cosy dining area while taking in the intriguing interior design and wall art.

Then the bravest of you can head to the stunning Penzance lido with it's incredible art deco architecture. Jump into the treated sea water pool warmed only by the sun ☀️, and go from 0-to-refreshed in 0.5s. Less brave (and more sane) readers can head for the heated part of the pool (slightly more expensive).

Book Artist Residence in advance as it can be quite popular. And Penzance Lido must be booked in advance for COVID reasons.

5. FISH AND CHIPS IN THE RAIN

Possibly *the best* fish and chips in Cornwall (we're biased but they genuinely have won awards), we proved to ourselves that supper on the beach is great in any weather! Arm yourself in waterproofs 💦 if you have to and book your slot for takeaway via the link above (this is a must, they do pretty much only online ordering - you'll probably be turned away as a walk-in) and make sure to order the katsu curry sauce as part of your order!

If you get really lucky (weather's looking up for this afternoon 🤞) the Porthtowan sunsets are pretty special while munching on the most perfectly crispy fish 🐟
