OCL's Most Sunday Roast Post Ever

As we make our way firmly into January, I think it's safe to say we're well and truly settled into roast season! Proving that Cornwall's food scene is most definitely more than just beach BBQs and beer gardens (and providing us with the best excuse of 'Roast Research' ever) this serving of 'Our Favourite...' post is here to help you choose, in no particular order, how to spend that most important meal of the week, The Sunday Roast 🍗🥩🥕

*Ps. all bar one of these are our genuine favourites, not gifted visits or freebies (yes, we spent way too much money on roasts but also yes, we were happy for the excuse 😅)

1. New Yard Restaurant

Mawgan

For looks alone, The New Yard Restaurant has to be one of the most effortlessly wonderful spaces around. Hidden deep within the Trelowarren Estate, the walled garden and olive tree courtyard 🌱 makes you feel instantly transported somewhere pretty special.

Done a little differently, there is a set Sunday roast menu of 3 delicious courses which begins soon after you're seated with a drink in hand. Changing weekly but never anything but fantastic, the food here is made with such skill and presented with such care (that Green Michelin Star comes as no surprise), the whole outing becomes something really quite special ⚡️

Not to mention the most gloriously yellow-orange Yorkshire pud (those New Yard chickens must live a pretty good life) you have ever seen 🐓

The highlight? The BEAUTIFUL yellow yorkshires and melt-in-your-mouth beef 🙌

2. Secret Quay Kitchen

Hayle

Every time I post about this place, it gets A LOT of people interested! Why? Probably something to do with the epic sunset view, on-the-water eating and the magic that is twinkling fairy lights in low light ✨

Sister spot to the team of Feed and all round winner of supper clubs, The Secret Quay Kitchen has got people talking for all the right reasons.

Ticketed only but again done as a 3-course set menu, it's an altogether sociable experience with everyone eating together as each course is served at the same time for all tables. There's a reason I didn't get many photos of the actual food, we were too busy stuffing our faces with hands down THE MOST GENEROUS roast-feast you have ever seen... 🙌 3x courses down and no, we didn't manage to finish but yes, we did take the leftovers home (waaaaay too good to waste!)

The highlight? All of it! The amount, quality, value of food and general vibe of the evening 🙌

3. The Gurnard's Head

Treen

If you find yourself walking the stunning coast line of Zennor, then you won't miss this famous yellow landmark (sort-of) on the horizon. Seemingly in the middle of nowhere but oh-so-worth the walk/hike/drive, The Gurnard's Head is gaining constant recognition for its fantastic food as well as its classic canary yellow exterior 💛

Serving up a more classic pub roast, we had the choice of beef, lamb, pork etc and promised with all the favourite trimming. Of course this came after a starter (beyond delicious although slightly regretted when we saw the size of the main... 👀) and alongside a hefty glass of seriously good red wine. Just make sure you do the walk before lunch, we had to pretty much roll ourselves out of there by the end of it...

The highlight? The perfectly soft pork and generous crackling 🙌

4. Star and Garter

Falmouth

The moment we uttered the words 'roast post', our comments were inundated with the suggestion of spending a Sunday down in Falmouth, at the Star and Garter. And boy, are we glad we took the advice! Set in a stunning Georgian townhouse, with a cosy bar area, roaring log burner and (most impressively) spectacular views of the Fal harbour ⛵️

But on to the food, OH THE FOOD... 🙌 Their winter menu is a delicious mix of roasted meats, catch of the day and rainbow veg; locally sourced and deservedly award winning. Plus don't even get me started on the cocktail menu 🍸I'm still dreaming of the Spiced Bloody Mary and Hazelnut White Russian...

Every element of this roast (we had the lamb) was probably the best yet, the potatoes were golden and crisped to perfection, the meat just fell apart and the cauliflower cheese was a cheesey-mustardy bowl of heaven 🧀 YUM.

The highlight? Those crispy roasties and stringy cauli-cheese 🙌

5. The Fox's Revenge

Summercourt

Ever since discovering this pub last summer, I can honestly say it's probably one of my favourite places to show people! Famed for its tipi and smokehouse dining in the summer, The Fox's Revenge has an equally wonderful experience for winter eating too. Stunning interior up and down, the whole place is just so cool 👌

The winter menu had me exciting the moment I saw it, filled with nduja-this and garlic wild mushroom-that it was high on the eating-out destination list the moment we hit September! The roast lived up to every expectation and more, the gravy alone was THE BEST I've ever tasted and the cheesy truffled cauliflower? Well don't even get me started... 🤤

<<checking out what treasures are hidden under his mountain of food...

😂

The highlight? The tastiest gravy yet 🙌

6. The Longstore

Charlestown

I wanted to reach far and wide with our Sunday lunch search so Charlestown had to feature! The location is just off the harbour and if you're lucky to get a mild, sunny day you might even get a spot on the terrace overlooking the tall ships ☀️

Known especially for its steakhouse-style dining, I was pretty damn excited to try the meat at The Longstore, what better place to eat a roast?! Choosing between beef, pork belly and chicken we could happily say this one was one of the best value meals we enjoyed with a serious plate-full of food 😱

Plus we couldn't resist the dessert menu - ever had ricotta doughnuts?! You probably should, they were AMAZING 🍩

The highlight? The delicious pork stuffing and cinnamon-sugar doughnuts 🙌

7. The Peterville Inn

St Agnes

Ok, we're biased because it's our local and walking distance (bring on the wine 🍷) but The Peterville had to feature as one of our roast research destinations! When we put out a question on @our.cornish.life about where to eat this winter, we had so many messages saying our lovely local pub was one of their favourites so it was a no-brainer and had to feature on our latest post 👌

Honestly, the service and staff were best by far here, a small but mighty team for sure! We had to start with Bloody Mary (have you noticed it's my go-to Sunday drink?? 🍅🔥) followed by both chicken and beef roasts, towered on our plates with veg, roasties, yorkshires and LASHINGS of gravy (as in a whole extra jug of the stuff! 🙌).

Plus the brownie to finish was just something else, despite the fact we were stuffed we still managed to fight over it 😅 thank god for that walk home...

(Now we'll just have to find our next free Sunday so we can go sample the roast at their brand new venture, The Wig & Pen 👏)

The highlight? The staff, service and a damned good Bloody Mary 🙌

8. The Searoom

St Ives

*PR trip

The latest addition to the The Roast Post: Porchetta at The Searoom! Positioned with perfect people watching, seagull watching and fishing boat watching potential, this little hidden gem may be just what you’re looking for on a cold Sunday in St Ives 👀

With a simple sounding menu, we were intrigued to see what hidden extras we were going to be treated to. Think pomegranate, sticky date sprouts and delicately spiced red cabbage - this roast was anything but simple 👏👏

The highlight? A cheeky glass of their own St Ives Liquor Co Limoncello to finish! 🍋
